Are you planning to get pregnant? One preparation you may not have considered is taking care of your oral health. First, have your gums checked for periodontal disease, which can lead to systemic problems including early delivery and low birth-weight babies. The other thing to have checked is whether your metal fillings are stable. While I won’t pressure anyone to have his or her metal fillings replaced, I will suggest that all future filling be metal free. Why? The FDA recently responded to pressure from health advocacy groups and admitted that dental amalgams containing Mercury can have toxic effects on developing infants and children and that pregnant women should avoid them.
